Check out this recap courtesy of Bates of his latest exhibition Appreciation for Letters, featuring both his work and Bjorndahl. The show was held at the L’Issue Gallery in Paris and will run for the next month.

Bates and Niels Bjorndahl first met in 1984 when the graffiti scene was still in its infancy in Denmark. They became fast friends and ran together through 1986 when Bjorndahl was forced to put an end to his graffiti career due to numerous run-ins with the local authorities. Bjorndahl then changed his focus to abstract art while Bates continued on with graffiti.

In 2009 the two met again and started exchanging ideas and creative inputs. In the fall of 2011 they decided to begin working on some canvases together, merging abstract art and graffiti in a new style. The result became a number of pieces where the artists experiment with different color dogmas and unusual types of canvases. Gallery with the gallery after the click, and a little bonus.

Dabs and Myla opened their latest exhibition at Known Gallery this past Saturday. Break Night Lovers is the first immersive installation the couple has put together at Known, which currently takes over the secondary showroom in the gallery. The room was hand painted floor to ceiling over a four day period. Saturated bands of rainbow colors provided the setting for the couples recognizable cartoon style that incorporates inanimate objects painted as characters with expressions of maddening happiness.

Heavily painted and decorated like a rainbow doused studio apartment where every piece of furniture has a face and character all of its own,Break Night Lovers makes you feel as though you have stepped into some crazy animated alternate reality. Each object and piece of furniture exhibits the same maniacal grin and empty eyes, as endearing as it is unsettling. Everything else in the room and including the walls is meticulously hand painted. It is mind boggling to know the level of detail that was achieved within such a short amount of time. Even the variegated refrigerator contents have hand painted faces, which also included hand painted spray paint cans that were almost completely sold out before the opening took place.

The show was well received, the room was virtually filled to capacity throughout the evening. Break Night Lovers is one of the most highly anticipated installations Known Gallery’s secondary showroom has seen to date. Running right along side KC Ortiz and Rime’s Sketchy M%#therfuckers, this is definitely a must see show. Check out the gallery after the click.

Adding to his legend, renowned tattoo artist Mister Cartoon recently met with the New York Public Library’s own Paul Holdengraber. Their interview, featured on the Intelligent Channel, covers education, career progression, and Cartoon’s work as artist-in-residence at the Andaz Hotel (located on 5th avenue across the street from the Library). They also chat about street art and Cartoon’s reaction to institutional and museum recognition. Video after the click.
